Summer Prints Edition - 7/19/24

As we are well into summer, many of us are spending a great deal of time at our vacation homes. I often hear from my clients that these houses have too many empty walls. If they are going to make the effort to fill them, they tell me they want something fun, and not too significant of an investment. In these cases, I often advise that my clients fill these spaces with some of my favorite underrated artworks: limited edition prints.

Not to be confused with posters, prints are legitimate artworks that are not just reproductions of paintings. Printmaking has been an integral part of artists' practices for centuries, and many prominent modern and contemporary artists use both time-honored printmaking techniques (etching, lithography) and newer methods (screenprinting) to make art that is wholly original and important to their legacy as creators of beauty, culture and innovation. A benefit of printmaking is that an artist can easily produce multiples of their work (at the same quality), which allows for the price points to be lower than for a unique artwork. Because these multiples exist, you could very well own a print that your favorite museum also has in their collection, a prospect I really love that can also help with increasing value down the road.

With all of that in mind, I have put together a selection of prints (separated by color vs. black and white) that are currently available and priced between $1,500 and $30,000, all made by significant artists of the 20th or 21st century. These works come either directly from the artist's print publisher or their gallery, meeting the highest standards of condition and authenticity. Some prints in my presentation are noted as having multiple variations of a theme, such as Joel Shapiro's Up Down Around series. Meaning, there are a few other limited edition prints that fit this theme but are a different image. I have only featured one in my presentation for the sake of length, but if you want to see the entire series of a particular print set, just ask and I'll be happy to show you.

If your hallways, guest bedrooms, powder rooms, over-the-couch walls, or the like could use a high quality infusion of color or visual intrigue, I say, add a print. You, your family and your guests will enjoy them now, and your heirs (or bank account if you decide to sell) will likely be grateful later!

As ever, please let me know if you have any questions, or if you'd like to see more. Until then, happy art hunting!
